Detroit Police Choose SIG Sauer M400 for SWAT Team

The Detroit Police Department—the municipal police force dedicated to protecting the largest city in Michigan—has adopted the SIG Sauer M400 rifle for its SWAT officers. The AR-platform rifle uses a direct-impingement operating system, is chambered in 5.56 NATO, features a full-length free-float M-LOK handguard, enhanced SIG trigger, 6-position telescoping stock and a rotating-lock bolt.

The M400 was the company’s first foray into direct-gas impingement, and at a time when many AR manufacturers were adding embellishments, SIG Sauer decided instead to produce a mil-spec version of Eugene Stoner’s original design, enhanced only by the precision of its modern CNC machinery. The stark approach was noted by Shooting Illustrated Rifles Editor Steve Adelmann during initial inspection.

“Tricked-out guns will not make you into a good shooter. Can they enhance skills and tactics or help reduce the negative effects of poor technique? Yes, but they are not going to transform a novice into a pro,” he wrote. The company has since discontinued the slick handguard version tested, but has stayed true to the basic platform while adding select improvements and features.

Tom Jankiewicz, executive vice president of Law Enforcement Sales at SIG Sauer explained, “…the M400 rifle is designed to exceed military standards to be the most accurate and reliable rifle in its class, which makes it an optimal choice for specialized law enforcement units in extraordinary enforcement situations.”

Adelmann’s observations during testing concur. “In reality a simple, well-built firearm reliable enough to bet your life on is the perfect foundation upon which to build all successful shooting. In the world of AR rifles and carbines, SIG Sauer's M400 is the perfect example of just such a solid base.”

“We are honored that the Detroit Police Department has entrusted SIG Sauer firearms to support the special tactical operations of their SWAT officers, and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the department,” Jankiewicz said.

The Detroit Police Department is composed of roughly 1,600 uniformed officers who patrol 12 precincts within the city.
