"So, the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant came to Hornady with an opportunity to tap into some of [its] capacity," said Hornady Vice President Jason Hornady. "The cool thing about this opportunity is, as a bullet manufacturer, one of the biggest, we have the ability with the Lake City organization to provide military-spec cartridges with better bullets. When you have an opportunity like this, you cannot pass it up."
The Hornady Frontier Cartridge lineup launches in 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem., designed to fill a wide variety of uses, including plinking, training, hunting or personal defense. Each cartridge is loaded with genuine Hornady bullets, providing users with the quality projectiles for which the company is known.
Like other bulk-quantity rifle ammunition on the market, Hornady Frontier Cartridge rounds are loaded at the Lake City plant in reloadable brass cartridge cases and use military-spec primers and powder.
Hornady offers multiple options in both .223 Rem. and 5.56 NATO in the Frontier Cartridge lineup. Options in .223 Rem. include three 55-grain projectiles. The first is a traditional FMJ design, featuring a G1 ballistic coefficient of .243. A 55-grain soft-point bullet is also provided, measuring in with a BC of .235. Finally, the .223 Rem. 55-grain options finish off with an HP Match bullet with a G1 BC of .254. Hornady also offers a 68-grain .223 Rem. loaded with a BTHP Match bullet that has a BC of .355.
The company offers many more options chambered for 5.56 NATO, though. Eight different loads are available, ranging in weights from 55 grains to 75 grains. The company's two 55-grain 5.56 NATO options include an HP Match load with a G1 ballistic coefficient of .235 and an FMJ load along the same lines as the military's M193 cartridge, featuring a BC of .243.
Three 5.56 NATO loads are available with 62-grain projectiles, including options with FMJ, BTHP Match and soft-point rounds. The BC measurements for these bullets are .274, .270 and .264, respectively. Finally, the company offers two BTHP Match bullets with bullets weighing 68 grains and 75 grains. The ballistic coefficient on these two projectiles measure in at .355.
In keeping with the bulk-quantity aim of the Frontier Cartridge lineup, Hornady will provide packaging in 20-, 150-, 500- and 1,000-round packs. Hornady's Frontier Cartridge lineup is planned for shipment in February 2018. For 1,000 rounds of the company's 5.56 NATO FMJ, the suggested retail price is $558.33.
