Smith & Wesson added new models to its budget-priced lineup of Self Defense pistols, offering consumers options with both flat dark earth and gray polymer frames.

“The Self Defense pistol series is designed for personal and home protection in a lightweight, reliable package and at a price point that offers a great value," said Jan Mladek, general manager of Smith & Wesson and M&P brands. "We are excited to expand the popular Smith & Wesson SD pistol series in new color options that appeal to our consumers.”

The Self Defense series of pistols are available in either 9 mm or .40 S&W and are designed to provide a number of benefits for individuals looking for a solid home-defense or personal-defense handgun. Some of the beneficial features include a trigger pull that is designed to be smooth and repeatable, as well as a polymer frame that provides lightweight, durable duty use.

The polymer frame included on the SD series is molded in a particular way that provides users with a comfortable grip that provides ideal ergonomics for a wide range of hand sizes. The guns are equipped with a white-dot front sight as well as a two-dot rear sight that ensures simple and intuitive targeting. The polymer frame features a molded-in Picatinny accessory rail that allows owners to mount lasers and/or tactical lights that add a new level to a personal-defense setup.

The Smith & Wesson SD series pistols featuring the new flat dark earth or gray polymer frame finishes will also incorporate a slide and barrel constructed from stainless steel and finished with the company's trademarked Armornite, which heightens resistance to corrosion.

The Smith & Wesson SD9 features a total capacity of 16+1 rounds, while the .40 S&W-caliber model features a total capacity of 14+1 rounds. Both guns have a 4-inch barrel and a total length of 7.2 inches. The flat-dark-earth models retail at a suggested price of $389, while the gray-frame models retail at a suggested price of $419.
