The 5.7x28 mm is a small-caliber, high-velocity, smokeless powder, rebated rim, bottlenecked centerfire cartridge originally designed for a handgun and the personal-defense weapon manufactured by FN. It is similar in length to the .22 WMR. Introduced in 1991 to some fanfare, it has mostly languished, finding little to no popularity in the United States. This was partly because of a lack for firearms chambered for it and partly because of limited availability of ammunition. That’s all changing for 2020 thanks to Ruger’s introduction of the 57 Pistol and Speer’s introduction of 5.7X28 mm Gold Dot Ammunition.

Speer's new 5.7X28 mm Gold Dot load is the first 5.7x28 mm ammunition specifically designed for self-defense. Speer’s line of Gold Dot ammunition contains some of the most trusted self-defense loads ever assembled; they are a favorite of law enforcement agencies across the country. Just like those trusted loads, the Gold Dot bullet for the new 5.7x28 mm load is built using Speer’s exclusive Uni-Cor method. The jacket is bonded to the core one atom at a time, virtually eliminating core and jacket separation. It also helps to create a projectile that’s accurate and tough, and that provides consistent penetration through all common barriers. High-quality brass, reliable primers and specially formulated propellant provide optimal feeding and ballistics.

The new Speer 5.7x28 mm ammunition will be available in 50-round boxes. Paired with the new 24-ounce, 20-round, Ruger-57 pistol, this should make for an exceptional, very high-capacity personal-protection handgun with lethal terminal performance and minimal recoil. Though the Ruger-57 might be a tad large for everyday carry, it and the new Speer ammunition should fill the role of the home-defense handgun well, providing good terminal performance with a recoil impulse almost anyone in the home can handle.
