Ruger’s AR-556 got an upgrade for 2020 that includes a 13.5-inch lightweight, free-floated aluminum handguard with M-Lok attachment points, B5 Systems Type P23 pistol grip and Bravo collapsible buttstock.

Lightening the platform to 6.7 pounds, the new handguard features 3, 6 and 9 o’clock M-Lok attachment positions, with a top rail that has been docked in the center to improve grip access. The fore-end still has a Picatinny top rail along at the front for accessories, as well as a rail on the receiver for a wide variety of optics configurations.

The rifle ships without sights and comes with a 30-round PMAG. The AR-556 has an overall length of 33 to 36.25 inches, with an adjustable length-of-pull from 11.13 to 14.38 inches depending on stock position. The 16.10-inch barrel is constructed with a 1:8-inch, RH twist, while the bolt is made from 9310 steel with an 8620 steel bolt carrier.

Aiding in the accuracy department, the AR-556 features the Ruger Elite 452 AR-trigger, a two-stage design that offers an incredibly smooth, crisp, 4.5-pound trigger pull. The full strength hammer spring makes for consistent primer ignition, while a lightweight hammer design allows for faster lock time and improved accuracy.

The AR-556 comes with a mid-length gas system for smooth operation, while the proprietary muzzle brake with radial port design significantly reduces felt recoil and muzzle movement, allowing for greater accuracy and fast follow-up shots. Loaded with features, the AR-556 comes with an MSRP of $899.
