Marksmanship Exhibit Opens at National Scouting Museum

"Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America and the NRA have worked together to provide Scouts with a safe and fun environment to learn about the shooting sports," said Phil Schreier, Senior Curator for NRA National Firearms Museum. "The Boy Scouts is where I first learned about firearms."

The exhibit contains photographs, firearms, merit badge books and patches covering the 100 year history of the Marksmanship Merit Badge. Firearms commissioned to commemorate Scouting have been generously donated to the exhibit by both Remington and Henry Repeating Firearms. Images were also supplied by Boy's Life Magazine and members of the Remington Society of America.

From BSA's founding in 1910, the shooting sports have been an exciting part of the Scouting experience. In fact, "Marksman" was one of the first 14 Badges of Merit offered in the original Scout Handbook. An estimated 20,000 Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting badges are earned every year.

NRA training counselors, certified instructors and range safety officers continue to provide a safe educational environment for Scouts to learn about the shooting sports at hundreds of BSA summer camps and range-day activities.

The exhibit is a cooperative effort between the staff's of the National Scouting Museum and the NRA's National Firearms Museum. It was generously funded by the NRA Foundation through the philanthropy of George S. Rich of Maryland.

The exhibit will be on display at the National Scouting Museum on1329 W Walnut Hill Lane in Irving, Texas.
