One of the many strengths of the Ruger 10/22 is the length and breadth of the accessory market for Ruger's flagship rimfire rifle. A select group of firearms—the 1911 pistol and the AR-15 rifle come to mind—can be completely rebuilt from Brownells or MidwayUSA (and other online retailers), but the 10/22 is the most affordable starting point (and, arguably, most fun to shoot).

ATI's Ruger 10/22 AR-22 Stock System combines two of the above firearms, putting an AR-15-like veneer on the hardy 10/22. The AR-15's pistol grip and collapsible stock, along with a freefloat fore-end capable of accepting a multitude of accessories, are copied in the AR-22, giving the standard-looking Ruger a more modern, modular look and feel.

Installation is quite straightforward. Any optical accessories will need to be removed from the 10/22, as it fits inside a polymer shell for the AR-22 system. Remove the barrel and receiver from the Ruger stock (first and foremost, of course, ensure the firearm is unloaded), and then follow the provided instructions to install. I found it helpful to use a set of polymer-tipped clamps to keep the two sides of the polymer shell together while assembling, but otherwise everything fit together as in the instructions.

The end product is a blank canvas, open for magnified optics, red-dot sights, iron sights or a combination of the previous can top the 21-inch Picatinny top rail. The fore-end has six positions upon which to add accessories, so a vertical foregrip, light, laser, sling mount and any other accessory one would care to add can be placed somewhere on the aluminum fore-end.

MSRP: $189.99.
