New for 2020: FN 509 Compact MRD Optics-Ready Pistol

FN America has released the smallest addition to its FN 509 family of pistols, the FN 509 Compact MRD, an optics-ready compact pistol featuring the company’s patented FN Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System. The addition expands the optics-ready FN 509 model lineup to a total of four handguns.

The striker-fired FN 509 Compact MRD is chambered in 9 mm and features a 3.7-inch (1:10-inch RH rifling) barrel and compact slide. Weight is 25.5 ounces and overall length comes in at 6.8 inches. Width is 1.35 inches and height varies—depending on magazine/configuration—from 4.8 to 5.1 inches.. It is available in both black and flat dark earth (FDE) finishes.

The patented optics mounting system is a carefully developed plate system that positions the optic with a focal point that allows for a low-profile mount. In addition, the system provides co-witnessing with the all-black iron sights, yet minimizes interference with the optic. 

The frame, reduced in overall size for concealability, features a MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail that accepts most compact pistol lights. The ambidextrous controls are also improved to aid in their manipulation and enhanced texturing on the two included backstraps provide better recoil management. A new, flatter faced trigger allows for more controllable trigger press and cleaner break. The let-off weight for the double action is between 5.5 and 7.5 pounds.

Each pistol ships in a branded soft-sided, zippered case with an FN Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System plate kit, one 12-round magazine with pinky extender and one 15-round magazine with grip sleeve. The handgun is also available in an all 10-round-magazine configuration for states with magazine-capacity restrictions.

The FN 509 Compact MRD also has the capability to accept all higher capacity FN 509 magazines with use of a sleeve. MSRP for the FN 509 Compact MRD pistol is $799 and it’s already available through authorized retailers.
