First Look: DPx HEST/F Urban Titanium Knife

DPx Gear teamed up with Southern Grind to produce the company's new HEST/F Urban Titanium knife, designed to provide individuals with an easy-to-carry, high-quality folding blade that tackles most everyday situations and emergencies.

“We have worked long and hard to design and build an all-American pocket folder,” said DPx Gear Owner Robert Young Pelton. “We are thrilled to find a manufacturing partner in Southern Grind, American craftsmen who share our vision and constantly exceed our expectations.”

Pelton, the recipient of more than two dozen patents in both the U.S. and Europe for his blade designs, commemorated the launch of this new blade with a numbered 300-piece first-production run manufactured by Southern Grind.

“Southern Grind is honored to be manufacturing high-end, heavy-use knives for DPx Gear," Southern Grind General Manager Jeff Beatty said. "We are selective in who we partner with, and when you see the new DPx Gear HEST/F Urban “Ti,” you will understand why this was an easy decision."

The DPx HEST/F Urban Titanium knife is constructed on a frame made from U.S.-sourced 6AL-4V titanium alloy, which features a gray bead-blast finish. Inside of the frame, users will find a high-quality blade made from CPM S35-VN stainless steel, which is also sourced from American stock. The blade features a high sword grind and comes with a polished, stonewashed finish.

The knife deploys easily, thanks to the use of a stainless-steel bearing pivot that enables users to flip open the knife effortlessly. The blade features the company's patented Blade Notch, which according to DPx Gear, allows the blade to deploy faster than a traditional automatic-open design. Once deployed, the blade locks into place, thanks to a frame lock made from 440C stainless steel.

In addition to the blade, the DPx HEST/F Urban Titanium includes a number of other features designed to aid in everyday situations. The knife features a built-in 1/4-inch hex drive, enabling owners to make use of a wide range of drives and other compatible tools with their knife.

The Urban Titanium also features the company's Tri-Gauge Wire Strippers, sized right to deal with everything from household and vehicle wiring to timer wires for electronics. At the rear of the handle, users will find a tungsten-carbide glass breaker that is an invaluable tool to have in the case of an auto accident.

To facilitate easy carrying, the DPx HEST/F Urban Titanium knife is equipped with a fully reversible pocket clip made from heat-treated titanium alloy. Spec-wise, the knife features a blade length of 2.9 inches and an overall length of 6.7 inches when deployed. Closed, the knife measures 3.875 inches long, 0.5-inch thick and 1 inch wide. Total weight of the knife is 3.35 ounces.

The suggested retail price on the DPx HEST/F Urban Titanium knife is $468.75.
