The August issue of Shooting Illustrated, on newsstands now, has the Savage Model 11 Scout rifle on the cover, and for good reason. This new .308 Win.-chambered rifle pays homage to Col. Jeff Cooper’s “Scout Rifle” concept, with a Model 11 action that conforms to most of the guidelines set down by the colonel. Savage’s Scout has the length, detachable box magazine, forward scope mount and iron sights, while offering superlative accuracy and the ability to be customized to the shooter.

While not a Scout rifle by any measure, the Lancer Systems L30 Heavy Metal is also chambered in .308 Win., but that’s where the similarity to the Savage ends. The L30 offers carbon-fiber furniture for weight reduction, ambidextrous controls and exotic components, bringing the AR-platform rifle in 7.62 NATO to new levels of performance.

And speaking of new levels of performance, we’ve tested a plethora of pistol ammunition over the years. It keeps getting better and better, and we’ve gone through reams of data to bring you the best of what we’ve found. Six popular self-defense calibers have been examined for the top five rounds, with points awarded for critical performance criteria like muzzle energy, penetration, expansion and recovered weight. See which ammo is top of the heap.

Once you’ve read about the best 9 mm ammunition, we’ve got an option in which to carry it. SCCY (pronounced “sky”) offers its CPX-2 at an MSRP only slightly more than $300, so you can afford that top notch ammo. With a polymer frame, three-dot sights, simple takedown and finger rest magazine, the CPX-2 offers big performance at a much smaller price.
