Shepherd Scopes, a division of Salvo Technologies, showed a range of new scopes at SHOT 2019 with applications in both tactical and hunting roles. Shepherd Scopes takes advantage of their close ties to their defense-oriented sister companies under the Salvo Tech banner to offer some of the best optical glass and optics hardware available to the civilian market.
The scope that caught my eye from Shepherd’s Tactical Scopes product line was the BRS 1-8X. Available with both MOA (model BRS-14) and mil-dot (model BRS-ML1) reticles, this stout scope is packed with well thought out features and incredibly clear glass optics. The BRS is a first-focal-plane scope, so the ranging and bullet-drop compensation features of the reticle are automatically scaled to the current magnification level.
I was particularly impressed by Shepherd’s solution to delivering a true 1X both-eyes-open capable scope, which is to specify the optics package for 0.95X magnification on the low end then adjust the final scope assembly to 1X exactly. This allows them to accommodate the normal variations in manufacturing tolerances, an area where many budget scope manufacturers cut corners.
This scope gives you true both-eyes-open shooting ability for CQB with the flexibility to identify and engage mid-range targets. This 1-8×28 FFP scope offers an integrated throw lever, large capped turrets, and a 34mm aircraft-grade one-piece tube. Fully multi-coated, extra-low dispersion glass maximizes resolution and brightness in low-light conditions and the scope is nitrogen filled and o-ring sealed for excellent waterproof, shockproof, and fogproof performance. The scope is a little on the heavy side at 25 ounces, but on the other hand this beast is going to survive the kind of abuse that will rapidly destroy most affordable 1-8X scopes.
The real killer here is the pricing. It’s frankly astonishing to find a true 1-8X FFP scope with the features and glass quality that Shepherd has packed into the product for under $1,000, much less the $849 MSRP for either reticle option. If you’re in the market for a tactical scope, this one is worth a very close look.
