Quick access long gun safe

Those who choose to protect themselves and their families inside their home with a rifle or shotgun may find that keeping their defensive long-arm in a traditional gun safe (think giant metal locking box) isn’t practical. Accessing this kind of safe can be slow and cumbersome, and since everyone’s floorplans and living situations are different, that big gun safe may not even be in the same room, let alone the same floor.

Hornady lockThis is where smaller, more portable rapid-access safes for one or two firearms can be handy. They can be strategically placed in a room or closet of choice, and they beat simply hiding an unsecured firearm. Below are a few examples.

Hornady RAPiD Safe Shotgun Wall Lock (MSRP $289)

While not technically a “safe” or “residential security container”, the Hornady RAPiD Safe Shotgun Wall Lock very much fits into this list. This device is designed to mount onto a wall or other vertical surface (such as the back of a heavy closet door) and securely hold a shotgun in place either vertically or horizontally. The RAPiD Safe Shotgun Wall Lock’s mechanism is electronically activated via RFID tags, RFID stickers or a 6-digit keypad for quick access.

Snap Safe Wall storageSnapSafe In-Wall Safe Long Version (MSRP $440)

The SnapSafe In-Wall Safe comes in two sizes, a regular 22-inch-tall version which is reminiscent of an up-armored bathroom medicine cabinet and a longer 44-inch-tall version that can securely hold most any modern tactical shotgun or carbine. Because all SnapSafe In-Wall Safes measure 16.25 inches in width, they’re designed to securely nestle in between wall studs found in the interior of most American homes. The studs serve as secure anchoring points. From this list, the SnapSafe In-Wall Safe for long guns is the product which requires the most work from the end-user in their home. For the SnapSafe In-Wall Safe to work, it must mounted and installed to an interior wall. However, because it lies inside walls, it takes up less space than most other types of safe.

Fastbox 360FastBox Model 360 Drawer Gun Safe (MSRP $409)

Most gun safes and residential security containers are designed to function vertically. The FastBox Model 360 Drawer Gun Safe works horizontally instead and is meant for spaces like under the bed, the trunks of vehicles or overhead shelves in closets. Inside, the safe is 33 inches long, 10 inches wide and 4 inches high and can hold at least one long gun or several handguns. When unlocked via its fast-access keypad or biometric peripherals, the FasBox Model 360 Drawer Safe’s interior slides out just like a drawer, to expose the storage space and give the user access to their firearm. This safe’s external body is pre-drilled in order to make it easy to secure to a solid surface.

VaultekVaultek RS200i (MSRP $1300)

From this list, the Vaultek RS200i is the most conventional safe, that is, it’s an upright standalone residential security container. However, the RS200i still counts on a rapid-access mechanism allowing the user quick access to their firearms. Despite its upright conventional design, Vaultek designed the RS200i to have a minimalistic footprint that doesn’t require much space. Internally it can hold one to three long guns, depending on how they’re set up with optics or other accessories. In addition to its quick-access biometric capabilities, the RS200i also connects to Wi-Fi to update the owner on what’s going on with their valuables at all times.
