Thanks to the construction of a solid-steel frame rather than lightweight, flexible polymer, Walther Arms took its competition-pistol lineup to new heights in 2019 with the launch of its Q5 Match ST in 9 mm. The new pistol is purpose-built to provide competition shooters with the gun they need to excel at the range.

“Walther’s goal was to take our existing high-performance PPQ, the Q5 Match, and push the boundaries of performance further than anything offered on the market,” said Bret Vorhees, director of product development for Walther Arms. “The Q5 Match Steel Frame exceeds all expectations in terms of performance, quality and attention to detail. This new product line shows what Walther is really capable of, and it’s just the beginning.”

Compared to the company's earlier model, built with a polymer frame, the Walther Arms Q5 Match SF offers a heavier platform with increased rigidity, which allows more-consistent performance from shot to shot. The increased weight of the platform also provides the extra mass needed to counteract muzzle flip and felt recoil, allowing shooters to keep the guns on-target for faster follow-up shots and transitions.

Each Walther Arms Q5 Match SF handgun is equipped with the company's PPQ Quick-Defense Trigger, designed to enhance accuracy through improved trigger control. Though the frame is machined from steel, the gun still retains the same ergonomic feel that made the company's polymer-frame Q5 and Walther PPQ popular with today's shooters. An enhanced beavertail allows shooters to choke up tightly against the top of the frame without worrying about slide bite, and the front of the frame features a Picatinny rail for adding accessories. The gun features an ambidextrous slide-stop lever, as well as a reversible, push-button magazine release.

On the slide of the Q5 Match SF, consumers will find a few features designed to enhance flexibility and performance. The guns are equipped with fiber-optic front sights and target-adjustable rear sights. For those looking to add a slide-mounted reflex sight, the slide is milled to accept mounting plates for today's most-popular handgun optics. Ports located at the front of the slide aid in barrel cooling and also reduce mass, allowing the slide to cycle faster for increased reliability and faster shooting. Serrations located at the front and rear of the slide allow users to manipulate the gun in multiple ways.

Each Walther Arms Q5 Match SF is equipped with a 5-inch barrel and measures 5.4 inches in height and 1.3 inches wide. Two models of the gun are available, one with a 15-round magazine and another with an extended magazine well and a larger, 17-round magazine. The suggested retail price on the pistol starts at $1,499.
