New for 2019: FN 509 Midsize MRD

posted on August 18, 2019

Created to meet the demands of military and law-enforcement professionals, as well as the defensive and recreational needs of the American gun owner, the FN 509 is a 9 mm striker-fired polymer-framed pistol with highly desirable features such as a cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel with target crown, interchangeable backstraps, fully ambidextrous slide stop lever and magazine release and a MIL-STD-1913 accessory mounting rail for adding on lights, lasers and other accessories.

FN America is now expanding the capabilities of the FN 509 platform with the introduction of the new optics-ready variant of its FN 509 Midsize pistol. The FN 509 Midsize MRD combines the highly desirable 15-round frame size variant of the FN 509 along with the patented optics mounting platform originally introduced on the company's full-size FN 509 Tactical, which is reviewed by Shooting Illustrated's Handguns editor here. The FN 509 Midsize MRD is also compatible with both FN 509 17-round and 24-round magazines with the appropriate magazine sleeves, allowing for even more rounds to be carried at one time.

The combination of the FN 509 Midsize MRD’s 4-inch slide and barrel with a mid-size frame allows the pistol to retain full-sized pistol performance within an easily concealed package. The Midsize MRD also features blacked-out co-witness iron sights which allow the user to maintain focus on the red dot of their optic with a clear sight picture and also serve as a backup in case of your red dot fails.

The pistol ships with two 15- or 10-round magazines and a soft-sided zip case that contains the optics mounting hardware allowing you to mount more than 10 commercially available optics. The MSRP for the FN 509 Midsize MRD is $799, and more information is available at
