CMMG launched its Mk47 Mutant rifle lineup in late 2014, providing firearm enthusiasts with a blend of AR and AK firearm elements. The Mutant borrowed the control features, modularity and accuracy potential of the popular AR-15 and blended it with the magazine and cartridge more commonly associated with the AK-47. For 2018, the company upgraded a number of elements on its popular Mutant rifle, creating a more attractive package for consumers in the form of the company's AKR and AKR2 models.

Since the Mk47 Mutant rifle is built on a mid-sized platform to better accommodate the unique bolt-carrier group used within the gun, standard AR-style charging handles are not compatible with the shortened platform. In the past, this prevented owners from installing their own aftermarket ambidextrous charging handles. Now, the Mk47 Mutant AKR and AKR2 rifles will include a custom-built ambidextrous charging handle straight from the factory.

In combination with this new ambidextrous charging handle, the guns will also ship with ambidextrous magazine releases and safety selectors, making the platform friendly to both left- and right-handed shooters. Additionally, current Mk47 Mutant rifle owners can order a compatible ambidextrous charging handle straight from the company to upgrade their guns.

Also found on the new Mk47 Mutant AKR and AKR2 rifles is an all-new RML15 handguard developed specifically by CMMG. The handguard features a continuous Picatinny top rail that provides plenty of real estate for optics and accessories. The handguard also incorporates M-LOK-compatible accessory-attachment points.

The CMMG Mk47 Mutant AKR carbine is built with a 16.1-inch medium-taper barrel machined from 4140 steel and topped with the company's SV muzzle brake and a 5/8-24 TPI threaded muzzle compatible with many aftermarket muzzle devices and sound suppressors. The gun is equipped with a Magpul MOE pistol grip and CTR adjustable stock and ships with a mil-spec trigger. With the stock collapsed, the overall length of the gun is 33.5 inches. Total unloaded weight measures in at 7.2 pounds.

Another model available in the company's updated lineup is the Mk47 Mutant AKR2, which ships with a Geissele SSA trigger in place of the standard mil-spec. The suggested retail price for the new models starts at $1,699.95.
