Riding the wave of optics-equipped, tactical-style handguns hitting the market in recent years, Springfield Armory announced the launch of its XD(M) OSP handgun in 2018. Standing for Optical Sight Pistol, the OSP ships from the factory with a slide milled to accept today's popular reflex optics, and the gun can be ordered with an optional Vortex Venom red-dot sight pre-installed on the pistol. The Springfield Armory XD(M) OSP also ships with two different barrels, giving consumers both a standard, non-threaded barrel and a threaded barrel compatible with most of today's 9 mm suppressors and muzzle devices.

"You have the versatility of both the threaded and non-threaded barrel without the hassle of going aftermarket, which tends to produce complications in fit,” Springfield Armory VP of Marketing Steve Kramer said. “Because our barrels are factory-crafted, there is no risk of an ill-fitting barrel, and we are able to provide the kit at a lower cost to our customers.”

The factory-milled slide also ships with suppressor-height sights, which provides users with two advantages. Obviously, the added height of the slights allows shooters to aim over the profile of an attached suppressor. However, the increased height also allows for the iron sights to co-witness with the 3-MOA red dot in the window of the Venom red-dot sight, ensuring that there's always a sighting solution, even if the optic isn't on.

Each non-threaded barrel shipping with the XD(M) OSP measures 4.5 inches long, while the threaded barrel measures 5.3 inches long and features 0.5x28 TPI muzzle threads. Both are constructed from hammer-forged steel, rifled with 1:10-inch right-hand twist rates and treated with a corrosion-resistant Melonite finish that also enhances the lubricity of the surface metal for increased reliability of operation. The barrels are paired with a full-length guide rod that works to mitigate recoil and help keep shooters on target. Each XD(M) is equipped with Springfield Armory's Mega-Lock grip texture, which aids in anchoring the full-size frame in a shooter's hand. Interchangeable backstraps also allow individual users to customize the handgun's grip to fit their particular hand size. Three differently sized backstraps are included with each pistol.

Mounting plates for the milled slide on the OSP are included with each pistol, and plates are compatible with the Vortex Venom, Burris FastFire 2 and 3, Leupold DeltaPoint and DeltaPoint Pro, JPoint Sights and Trijicon RMR. Each pistol also ships with two 19-round magazines. Dimensionally, the gun measures in at 8.6 inches long, 5.5 inches high and 1.2 inches wide. Including the Vortex Venom red-dot sight, the gun weighs in at 31.1 ounces. The Venom-equipped Springfield Armory XD(M) OSP retails at a suggested price of $958, while the milled-slide-only model retails at a suggested price of $710.
