Magnum Research announced the launch of a new model of its popular Desert Eagle, adding a unique case-hardened variant to the company's product line. The new model adds to the more than 50 different variations on the Desert Eagle design.

The Case-Hardened Desert Eagle pistol will be available in .357 Mag., .44 Mag. and .50 AE. The gun is built on the company's Mark XIX platform, which features a 6-inch barrel and measures in at an overall length of 10.75 inches and 7.5 inches high. Like all Desert Eagles, the case-hardened model operates using a gas-operated rotating bolt, which stands out among semi-auto pistol designs.

The color-case hardened finish features a clear-coat protective covering that protects the firearm from scratches and other environmental concerns that could potentially damage the finish on the gun. Two pairs of grips ship with the gun. More attractive wood grips are included with an engraved Magnum Research logo to complete the classic look of the gun, while an added second pair of molded rubber grips ensure that shooters have a comfortable grasp on the pistol for extended range sessions.

Other features of the new Desert Eagle include the Weaver-style accessory rail machined into the top of the barrel, as well as an ambidextrous thumb safety located on the slide. The pistol's frame, slide and barrel are all constructed using carbon steel in order to take the classic case-hardened finish.

Case-hardened finishes have been found on firearms for centuries and are a result of an ancient process that pairs up carbon steel with a high-carbon outer shell that improves the hardness and toughness of the metal's surface, allowing it to better withstand the rigors of everyday use. Multiple compounds are used to cause this finish, and the materials used include a number of impurities, which contribute to the blended finish usually associated with case-hardened materials. The result from this process produces a finish that is similar to bluing in terms of corrosion-resistance.

The Magnum Research Case-Hardened Desert Eagle model retails at a suggested price of $2,278.
