First Look: Faxon Firearms Match Series Barrel

Faxon Firearms kicked its number of barrel offerings up with the addition of a brand-new lineup called the Match Series. The new barrels incorporate a number of high-quality features designed to improve the shooting experience.

The Faxon Match Series starts off with a blank of 416R stainless steel, which provides an excellent base for precision machining, providing cleaner cutting properties than commonly used 410 and 416 stainless steel. This allows the company to ensure that machining and rifling can be performed with a greater level of precision, producing better-defined bores that provide increased accuracy over other options on the market.

In addition, 416R stainless also designed to withstand use in extreme cold, having the ability to endure temperatures of up to -40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a temperature where other grades of stainless steel have a propensity for failing. The 416R stainless-steel barrels produced by Faxon feature a salt-bath-nitride finish, which ensures that the barrels will better withstand corrosion and wear.

Another ingredient in the accuracy recipe of the Faxon Match Series barrel is the inclusion of 5R rifling, which changes the geometry of the lands and grooves inside of the barrel in order to prevent the buildup of fouling and lessen bullet deformation as it travels through the bore.

The difference between conventional rifling and 5R rifling is that 5R is machined with lands opposing grooves rather than other lands. In addition, the sides of the lands in the rifling are sloped, providing a shallower angle where lands meet grooves, which prevents lead, copper and fouling from getting trapped in the sharp corners.

Finally, the Faxon Match Series barrels are finished with NP3, which is designed specifically for steel and aluminum alloys and provides a nickel-based coating that is evenly deposited across the surface of the steel, combining electroless nickel with Teflon.

The benefit of this finish is that shooters can fire their guns for more extended periods of time without cleaning. Once cleaning is required, fouling and other residue wipes off easily with a cloth. Other benefits include corrosion resistance and reduced friction wear, providing a longer service life for firearms.

The Faxon Firearms Match Series barrels will be available in .223 Wylde, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 Grendel, .308 Win. and .300 BLK. Available profiles include Pencil, Gunner, Heavy Fluted and Flame Fluted. Suggested retail prices for the .223 Wylde Match Series barrels start at $225.
