Smith & Wesson announced the addition of the M&P Shield M2.0 pistol to its product lineup in 2017, joining other updated M2.0 models in the company's M&P lineup, including the M&P M2.0 reviewed here and the M&P Compact M2.0.

The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield M2.0 pistol launched with a range of new models, including multiple chamberings in 9 mm and .40 S&W. Several variations are also offered with Crimson Trace lasers integrated into the front of the pistol's frame, just below the muzzle, in order to aid in target acquisition, especially in low-light environments.

The M&P 9 Shield M2.0 incorporates many of the same enhanced features found in other models of Smith & Wesson's upgraded M2.0 lineup. One of the more obvious changes from the original Shield model is the addition of an enhanced grip texture that allows users to obtain a more secure grip on their pistol, maintaining control through rapid strings of fire and in moist environments. Another change to the polymer grip frame includes an 18-degree grip angle, added by the company after ergonomic studies concluded that this angle provided a natural aiming point for most shooters.

In addition to the improved grip texture, the gun also features the M2.0 trigger found in all of the company's new models, providing users with a lightened pull and a noticeable trigger reset that allows shooters to fire rapid follow-up shots. The pistol also incorporates the company's patented take-down system, which uses a rotating lever and sear-deactivation mechanism that enables owners to disassemble the gun for cleaning and maintenance without pulling the trigger.

A look at the dimensions on the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield M2.0 proves that this gun was designed for carry in mind, featuring a slim 0.95-inch grip frame that conceals easily on the body. The gun measures 6.1 inches long, 4.6 inches high and includes a sight radius of 5.3 inches. Total weight of the gun with an unloaded magazine is 18.3 ounces. The barrel length on the Shield is 3.1 inches.

Models chambered in 9 mm and .40 S&W can also be had with an integrated Crimson Trace red laser. The laser is powered with two No. 357 silver-oxide batteries, which provide a battery life of four hours. The laser features three settings: on, pulse and off, along with ambidextrous push-button activation. Windage and elevation are adjustable on the integrated-frame laser unit.

The slide and barrel on the M&P Shield M2.0 are machined from stainless steel and feature the company's Armornite finish, which is designed to ward off corrosion. The guns ship with two magazines, one 7-round and one 8-round extended. The standard model ships with steel sights, one white-dot front and a two-dot rear sight. Models are also available with or without a manual thumb safety.

The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield M2.0 in 9 mm and .40 S&W retails at a suggested price of $479. Models with the integrated Crimson Trace laser sell at a suggested price of $499, while night-sight-equipped models retail for $579.
