Quick: What’s the first image that comes to mind when the words “tactical boots” hits your ears? Navy SEALs? SWAT teams? The guy at the gun store with the plate-carrier vest? While it might be tempting to dismiss the concept as something suitable only for law enforcement, military or private security, there’s a lot to like about the current crop of footwear aimed at the defensive-minded citizen.

Unlike your child’s Little League practice, your defensive training shouldn’t get postponed by inclement weather. While no one particularly enjoys spending the day in the rain, a realistic training regimen should include some time out in the elements you’re likely to face in your day-to-day routine. Cold and snow in northern climes, rain and fog in the Pacific Northwest and dust and heat in the Southwest are facts of life for residents of those areas.

And, while you should be training in the worst of that weather, there’s simply no reason to be miserable doing it. With the plethora of great options now available, staying warm (or cool) and dry is easier than ever. This extends to footwear, naturally, and a wide variety of lightweight, sturdy boots has been assembled in this guide to assist you.
