GX4 Graphene

Taurus International Manufacturing has just announced the latest addition to the popular line of GX4 “slimline” pistols, the new Taurus GX4 Graphene. This 9mm stainless steel frame, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol is the first Taurus product to incorporate graphene, a carbon based chemical layer that has a greater ability to reduce friction and wear, resulting in a unique gray finish and surface treatment on the pistol. Aside from graphene’s physical properties, the gray finish, along with the decorative hexagonal patterns found on top of the slide behind the front sight, distinguish this new variant from the other pistols in the GX4 line.

Without getting into overly complex chemistry, graphene is the result of carbon atoms that are tightly bound in a hexagonal pattern. Graphene actually related to graphite, which is also carbon based but with a different chemical composition. Even at the atomic level (the thinnest layer possible) graphene is able to hold together very strongly and stay that way by virtue of its atomic bonds. While graphene technology has a wide variety of both practical and industrial applications, in the case of the new Taurus GX4 Graphene, it helps reduce wear and tear as a surface treatment for these firearms.

MIM Myths

Metal-injection molding (MIM) creates complex, durable and reliable metal parts in things we use daily. Its ability to churn out high volumes at reduced cost endeared it to the firearm industry decades ago. Despite that fact, gun companies we asked about the process were tight lipped.
