One of the weakest aspects of a built-up shooting position off a bench or prone is the rear of a rifle. Usually, benchrest or prone positions begin with a bipod or a sandbag rest at the front of the rifle, but many shooters compromise the stability of the front by doing little to support the rear of the rifle. Enter the Accu-Shot Monopod from B&T Industries.

Novice rifle shooters bury the buttstock into their shoulder and begin shooting, not recognizing that the point-of-impact can easily change with heartbeats, breathing and other variables. More experienced shooters will use rear bags to elevate the buttstock of the rifle, cupping the bags with their support hand and squeezing the bags to adjust point of aim. This gives the rifle a more solid shooting position. To take it to the next level of stability, however, shooters need to look at monopods.

Monopods are single-leg devices that attach to the underside of a rifle's buttstock, usually with a Picatinny-rail attachment. Many monopods on the market are fixed-length devices, forcing the shooter to compensate by building up the front rest to a certain height. This can cause issues, depending on the shooting terrain or the exposure of the shooter. The Accu-Shot Monopod addresses the issue with built-in height adjustments.

The unit features a threaded rod that runs through the center axis of the monopod. A release button allows for quick extensions from 4 inches to 5.2 inches in height, while finer adjustments can be made by twisting the monopod body around the center axis. A thumbnut is included to lock down final adjustments.

The Precision Rail Monopod Shooting Illustrated received features a Picatinny-rail clamp that is adjusted using a simple flat-bladed screwdriver. The monopod also features a position pin that allows shooters to fold the device along the rail when not in use.

The device also features a polymer rest on the bottom of the monopod, but the company recommends the use of its replacement steel cap accessory for law-enforcement uses or when shooting off concrete. The cap accessory retails for $9.95.

The company offers three separate models of the Precision Monopod. The rail monopod, featured in this article, is available in three different heights, and retail prices start at $94.95. The company also features a stud-mounted monopod, as well as an application-specific monopod designed for use on Accuracy International and Sako TRG rifle stocks.
