To be effective at stopping a bad guy, the ammo does not have to be of a brand-new design or cost twice as much as practice rounds. Remington's 155-grain .40 S&W load is a perfect example. Impacting at 1 fps less than the speed of sound, this bullet expanded to almost 1.8 times it original diameter, penetrated over a foot inside the 10-percent ordnance gelatin and retained all of its weight. Not bad for a conventional hollow point.
