First Look: Magpul PMag D-50 Drum Magazine

Nothing screams authority like the Magpul D-60 drum magazine, holding 60 rounds of 5.56 NATO ready for the ultimate range mag-dumps. Ever since the release of the company's first drum magazine, Magpul's engineering team has aimed at finding ways to improve on this popular and innovative design. After they couldn't find any way to improve the original D-60, they decided to take the concept to the next level. The Magpul D-50 packs 50 rounds of 7.62 NATO or .308 Win., ready for a dump from your go-to .308 AR rifle.

Built with the strength- and durability-enhancing elements of the company's M3 magazine design, the Magpul D-50 is designed for use in SR-25/M110-pattern guns and built to the same reliability standards as the original D-60 and the company's famous PMag 30-round AR magazines. The drum is made from strong, lightweight polymer and features a translucent rear cover, allowing users to have an instant visual identification of how many rounds are left in the magazine. For disassembly and maintenance, all consumers need is a flat-blade screwdriver, and the rear of the magazine features the same dot-matrix design as Magpul's other PMags, allowing users to organize and track individual mags.

Each Magpul D-50 features the same ratchet loading lever found on the smaller D-60, which relieves spring tension and allows users to drop round in the top of the magazine by hand without pushing against the magazine spring. The internal dimensions of the D-50 enable shooters to load match ammunition that exceeds SAAMI specifications, like M118LR rounds, thanks to an OAL of 2.830 inches. However, Magpul warns that the D-50 is designed for use with 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. rounds only and is not recommended for use with other short-action calibers, like the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Each Magpul D-50 drum magazine, available in black only, weighs 1.7 pounds empty and 4.5 pounds loaded, making it one of the lightest 7.62 drum magazines on the market. Each magazine measures 8.34 inches in height, 4.35 inches in length and 4.64 inches wide. All Magpul magazines are made in the USA, and the suggested retail price on the magazine is $149.95.
