FN America announced the launch of its new FN 509 pistol in the run up to the 2017 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits. The company developed the gun as a candidate for the Modular Handgun System competition launched by the U.S. Army.

The team at FN America started with the popular FNS Compact pistol as a starting point in the new gun's design. The overall goal of the project was to provide end users with a handgun that met the highest possible standards for reliability, performance and ammunition compatibility. The testing of the new FN 509 involved the use of more than 1 million rounds of ammunition.

A number of upgrades and changes were made to the FN 509 platform. The new gun uses aggressive slide serrations and improved textures on the grip frame to provide more purchase for shooters. The company also incorporated streamlined controls and a recessed target crown on the barrel. The pistol is equipped with a non-manual safety, a striker-fired DAO action and 3-dot luminescent iron sights. The suggested retail price on the new FN 509 is $649.
