The May issue of Shooting Illustrated, on newsstands now, covers the latest pistols, rifles and shotguns released in 2016. Scores of new handguns, rifles, carbines and shotguns are profiled in this issue, with pertinent specs listed and important features highlighted. If it was introduced at SHOT Show this past January, chances are it’s in this issue. Check out the latest in new guns in one handy guide!

Also handy is our “Best of the Best”—the 2015 Golden Bullseye-winning-guns and gear. These are the cream of the crop for rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition, accessories and other gear, as well as a special Pioneer Award for the individual we felt made a lasting contribution to our industry. Pick up our May issue to see what we chose as the very pinnacle of the firearm industry’s offerings.

Since we’re discussing the pinnacle of offerings, handguns from STI represent some of the most-coveted pistols for competition and concealed-carry. The Marauder, a high-capacity 9 mm aimed at both markets, gets put through its paces in the hands of a 3-gun competitor. See how this top-end 2011 (double-stack 1911) fared in the exhausting paces of competition and testing.

Speaking of competition and testing, a great way to introduce stress and highlight the importance of speed and accuracy is to partake in some sort of handgun competition. Whether it’s the NRA’s own Bianchi Cup, a run at Steel Challenge, an IDPA-based match or even 3-gun, taking part in a competitive shooting sport introduces stress, decision-making and the importance of performing at one’s peak—just what you want in a defensive application. Competitive shooter Caleb Giddings presents an overview of different shooting disciplines in which one can choose to participate should one desire to hone his or her competitive edge.
