This weekend, as part of its third annual “Shotgun Wedding Sale” promotion, a Lubbock, TX, jeweler is offering the choice of a new shotgun or rifle with the purchase of an engagement ring valued at $2,000 or more.

As a play on words, as well as showing an understanding of the popularity and importance of firearms and gun ownership to the residents of West Texas, Thacker Jewelry has teamed with Lubbock gun dealer LSG Tactical Arms for the matrimonial promotion. For those who earn a gift certificate, a NICS background check will be required for buyers, who will have a choice between a Remington 870 12-gauge pump shotgun or a Savage AXIS XP bolt-action .243 Win.

Because firearms are a part of the fabric of life for many persons in his region, Joe Thacker said combining a ring sale with shotguns was “a natural combination.”

“Farming, hunting, ranching is all intertwined. So, it’s just a natural fit for Texas,” Thacker said.

Thacker said his launched the “Shotgun Wedding” promotion three years ago when he heard about a store in another part of the country doing something similar.

“Who doesn’t want to get a shotgun or a rifle and in the process capture the love of their lives?” he told CNN this week.

Thacker said 35 rings were sold by his store during last year’s gun promotion.

LSG Tactical Manager Steve Burns told Lubbock television station KXAN, the “shotgun wedding special” is just natural for gun-loving Texans.

“Most guys (around here) grew up hunting. Or at least exposed to hunting if not by their family, but by their friends, or social groups. So it’s something that’s pretty natural for all of us,” Burns said.

The sale runs from Oct. 27 – 29.
