Earlier this year, we attended the inaugural 5.7 Fest event dedicated to the 5.7x28mm round. Manufacturers of firearms, ammunition, optics and more were present at the event, with items specifically crafted for the round as well as other general-use items that make shooting 5.7 even more fun. One of the manufacturers we had a chance to visit with is Fiocchi Ammunition, who has been manufacturing 5.7x28 mm ammo for quite a while.

With ammunition—specifically, the lack thereof—being one of the limiting factors in the popularity of the 5.7 round, it was encouraging news indeed that Fiocchi was launching new value packs for 2024. Two different flavors are available, both with 300 rounds of 40-grain full metal jacket ammunition. One pack has, in addition to the FMJ, 100 rounds of 40-grain hollowpoint ammunition, for those that rely on the 5.7x28mm for defensive purposes, while the other pack has 100 rounds of 62-grain FMJ ammo, which is a subsonic round for those interested in suppressing their 5.7x28mm firearms.

While the launch of bulk ammunition packaging ordinarily wouldn’t be much of a story, in the case of 5.7x28 mm, it’s a bigger deal than, say, standard 9 mm. It’s hard to pin down exactly which was more restrictive in the acceptance of 5.7x28 mm: scarcity of firearms, or scarcity of ammunition. With Ruger launching several firearms in this caliber, all at eminently affordable prices, the first barrier to entry fell; with the increase in ammunition, the second looks like it might be falling as well. Fiocchi’s bulk ammunition packs are welcome additions to the company’s excellent line of ammo, and hopefully indicate more may be on the horizon for 5.7x28mm.
