First Shots: KelTec KSG410 Shotgun

KelTec downsizes the KSG platform to accommodate the .410 round.

The KelTec KSG upset the apple cart when it was introduced in 2011. The design is a reflection of KelTec’s way of building guns, with extensive use of polymers, dual-magazine tubes and bullpup action. KelTec has expanded the pump-action KSG line since then, and is now adding a model chambered in .410-bore.

The KSG410 takes the light weight and short size of the original KSG and mixes it with the easy recoiling .410-bore shotgun round. It has dual magazine tubes that hold five rounds each, meaning you can have 10 rounds of shells ready to go at a moment’s notice. There is an integrated carry handle / fiber optic sight on the top of the receiver for fast target acquisition. The shotgun is 1.7 inches wide, 26.1 inches long and weighs just 5.4 pounds when empty. That short overall length and 18.5 inch means it’s easy to maneuver inside of tight spaces without having to ask the government for permission to own a shorter shotgun.

The .410-bore is the smallest shotshell in common use today. However, even though it’s dwarfed by its 12 gauge and 20 gauge cousins, it’s a popular cartridge for training, plinking and competition. Newer shotshell rounds designed for all the .45 Colt/.410 revolvers out there means there is also a wide range of defensive shotshells available in .410-bore, making this shotgun an all-around performer.
