Because it is so often used in a defensive situation, we are revisiting the .22 LR, this time with CCI's 40-grain Velocitor load. This is a great small-game load from a rifle because it will expand, penetrate deep and not damage a lot of meat on edible game. Out of a handgun with a short, 2.4 inch barrel, it's a different, but similar story. The bullet failed to expand at all and penetrated more than 14 inches. This left an almost non-existent wound cavity in the gelatin and would for sure do the same in a bad guy. Since you won't be eating such quarry, that's not a good thing. For short-barreled handguns, the Velocitor is not a viable option unless poking a very small hole in the target is your goal.
