SCAR-like looks and accuracy enhancing features make this new rimfire a great choice for training.

Anschütz has introduced the MSR RX22 small-bore tactical training rifle. Featuring a target barrel and a competition-inspired trigger, the MSR RX22 is certainly no plinker. Rather, it’s a full-featured, precision .22-caliber training and small-game hunting rifle.

The MSR RX22 was the joint development by three German companies: Anschütz, German Sport Guns and ESC Ulm. The goal of this cooperation was to develop and produce a highly accurate semi-automatic rifle with excellent shooting performance that is suitable for the dynamic disciplines as well as semi-auto precision shooting. The MSR RX22 offers an extremely accurate self-loading rifle platform with excellent shooting performance and exceptional reliability. This new Anschütz rifle operates on a force-locking blowback action system with a hammer lock.

The MSR RX22 barrels are manufactured to the same exacting tolerances of Anschütz’ target barrels with a special button-rifling process. The barrel also features a recessed target crown. The single-stage trigger’s components are hardened and finely ground to produce a fast trigger with a very consistent release. The trigger can be adjusted from 3.3 to 5.5 pounds, and it is set at 4 pounds by the factory.

The MSR RX22 was designed for ease of use for either a left- or right-handed shooter. The cocking handle can be located in any of three positions on either side of the rifle for a total of six possible cocking-handle locations. The trigger-locking safety is easily engaged by way of a large selector switch on either side of the rifle.

The MSR RX22 is available in four versions. The Desert and Black Hawk models feature a side-folding stock that is collapsible for length of pull and adjustable for cheek weld. Both rifles have Picatinny rails on the side and bottom of the foreend for attaching accessories. The Precision and Precision Black models have fixed wooden stocks and foreend components. All rifles have a full-length Picatinny rail on top for mounting the included flip-up iron sights as well as your choice of optics.

The rifles come equipped with one 10-round polymer detachable single-stack magazine, and magazines with capacities of 2, 5, 20 and 22 rounds are also available as accessory items. The suggested retail price of the standard Desert and Black Hawk models is $895.

There’s been some brouhaha over the FN SCAR in recent weeks, including some doubts about the SCAR’s future with the Special Operations community.

Here’s what FNH USA‘s Executive Vice President of Military Operations Mark Cherpes told us:

“In the early stages (presolicitation) of the SCAR program, the draft requirement defined a single weapon platform capable of adapting to multiple calibers (i.e. 5.56×45 mm, 7.62×51 mm, and 7.62×39 mm). FN had proposed and offered a single-platform system to USSOCOM that would adapt via conversion kit to SOF current and future ammunition. During the requirements finalization phase, the SOF operators took the decision that the weapon should be split in two platforms, one gun for 5.56 and a second gun for 7.62. The reason this decision was made at the time is that the SOF operators did not like the fact that the 5.56 base platform would have an increase in weight over the M4. The weight difference between the MK 16 Standard and the SCAR H Standard is about half a pound. Upon completion of the developmental test (DT), the operation test (OT), and the full Fielding and Deployment Release (FDR) authorization, AKA Milestone C, a new group of operators reversed that initial decision and said that they wanted to move back to the original spirit of the program: a single weapon platform capable of converting between 7.62 and 5.56.

Basically, to accomplish a multi-caliber system requires that we develop the gun on the basis of the largest caliber and then scale down the conversion kit to go to a smaller caliber. The MK 17 receiver is a little larger to accommodate the 7.62×51 mm ammunition. It is not possible to scale up a smaller receiver to accept 7.62 ammunition, thus the MK 17 was chosen as the base platform. This was almost seven years after the initial decision to split the platform and a new group of operators had rotated into the SCAR program effort. FN finalized the 5.56 conversion kit in late 2010 and it has passed all DT and OT testing, and an initial delivery order has been placed for the conversion kit.”
