Stack-On Products Portable Cases For Security on the Go

Last Fall, Stack-On Products introduced a new portable security case with an electronic lock that meets TSA guidelines for airline travel for firearms. At the 2012 SHOT Show, Stack-On unveiled 3 additional portable cases to create a new exciting family of products that provides more options for storage.

These cases feature a slim line design which allows for storage under the seat of many cars and trucks. Foam padded interior protects the contents from scratching. All are designed to be secured by a steel cable (1500 lb test strength) that passed through the body of the case and is locked in place when the lid is closed. A cable is included with each unit.

Two of the new Portable Security Cases come with Biometric locks. The locks are programmed to accept 28 different fingerprints and include a backup trouble key. Biometric access provides greater security and easy access with no combinations to remember.

The other two Portable Security Cases operate using a 3 touch electronic key pad that can store a 3 to 8 digit code. Easy to use and program with the users personal code. A backup key is included.

Two sizes are available for each of the locking methods – a smaller, briefcase sized case that can hold a pistol plus room for valuable storage (dimensions are 11″ w x 12-1/2″ d x 2-3/8″ h) or it’s big brother that can hold 2 pistols plus room for valuables or an iPad/tablet (dimensions are 12-1/8″ w x 12-1/2″ d x 2-5/8″h)

I’ve handled these and think they are probably good for home or the office, so long as you bolt them down. But not for airline travel.

Nothing says “steal me” like a small locked hard-case inside checked-in luggage. Seriously, nobody who knows airports would ever suggest this.

I’m not trying to say it’s a bad product, only that it is bad to take any product like this into the airport and expect it to meet you on the other side.

If you are going to travel with a gun, get yourself a larger hard-case that takes a padlock – I use big Pelican cases. They weigh just under 50 pounds when loaded with all my personal junk – and maybe one tiny pistol. Do not place the pistol inside another locking case, or they will make you check it separately. Tell them that the big hard-case IS your gun case. I just use a soft-side, non-locking pistol bag and put it on top of everything else in that Pelican. Then I use two padlocks and call it a day.

The handlers all know the big hard-case with padlocks is holding a gun. But there is no way for them to slip 50 pounds of big case into their backpack and walk it out during lunch.

I have only had one airport counter person ever look at me funny during check-in (Sarasota), and her supervisor said that “all the smart ones do it the same way, especially if they connect through Atlanta.”

    Good luck.
