Despite Economy, Ohio, U.S. Gun Sales Defy Gravity

The economy of Ohio is centered to a high degree on the manufacturing of a myriad of consumer products, perhaps to a higher degree than dozens of other states. As a result, one would think the current downturn in the national economy would be intensified in The Buckeye State.

Ohioans may not be dining out as much or buying new refrigerators and pickup tracks, but recently released figures from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) indicate they are continuing to purchase firearms at a record pace.

During the first seven months of 2011, the FBI conducted 247,847 background checks for firearm purchases at gun sellers in Ohio, an increase of 17.7 percent from the same period in 2010. Further, checks were up 9.2 percent from 2009 and 42.4 percent from 2008, according to NICS figures.

The number of background checks—along with federal excise tax totals—is considered one of the most accurate measures of gun sales. While not all checks lead to purchases, a very high percentage do.

On the national level, the quarterly Firearms and Ammunition Excise Tax Collection report released this week by the Department of the Treasury indicates firearm and ammunition manufacturers reported tax liabilities of $110.1 million in the first calendar quarter of 2011, an increase of 8.2 percent over the same period last year.

The quarterly report, which covers the time period of Jan. 1 through March 31, indicates $37.12 million was due in taxes for pistols and revolvers, $33.71 million for firearms (other)/ long guns and $39.27 million for ammunition (shells and cartridges). Compared to the same time period in 2010, tax obligations were up 18.5 percent for pistols and revolvers, up 7.19 percent for firearms (other)/ long guns and up 0.74 percent for ammunition (shells and cartridges).

Excise taxes on firearms and ammunition sales (also known as Pittman-Robertson funds) are paid quarterly by firearms and ammunition manufacturers, and earmarked for state wildlife conservation and habitat restoration programs. In the past 15 years, excise taxes on firearms have generated more than $3 billion for state wildlife programs, hunter education, shooting ranges and other programs.

I bet a big part of Ohio gun sales are Garands going out of the Civilian Marksmanship Program North Store at Camp Perry during the National Matches in July and August.

    • Dr.Scott says:

Wouldn’t be surprised, I’ve been having a hard time finding one under $2000 or so out in Kansas for years. Granted, there are on-line resources, I know; but buying sight-unseen….

In any event, preach, good Sir, and let everybody possible know about the CMP.

    • Floyd says:

My only son-in-law purchased a junky M-1 and the first time he tried it (at a supervised range) it fell apart. As I had toted one in the Guard I grabbed it and tore it apart. months later, with a new barrel, spring, bolt, stock (wi/pins) and a trip to an armory to install barrel and do a “head space check” and finally a new trigger/hammer/safety unit as the old one would allow you to fire with safety “on”. It broke my heart when the Guard took my Garand, shoved me into the drivers seat of an APC and issued me a $17.00 45 caliber grease gun. F

  2. S.Lynn says:

All I know is when the fit hits the shan I’ll be able to trade guns and ammo for food, medical supplies, etc. more so than those that are accumulating gold.

Ohioans are obviously fired up about their new high-caliber governor. Looks like this round goes to the Republicans. It would seem the unions are about shot, but don’t get complacent, they still are gunning for their collective bargaining rights (translation, extortion rights) and have targeted the next election to re-gain them.

More likely they are purchased for self defense. There has been a steady influx of Detroit refugees.

It appears that many Americans are scared of this administration. They do not trust Obama. They don’t want to see their First Amendment Rights taken away, but they fear that Obama will do just that though he promised not to.

The Boyscout Motto: Always be prepared.

  8. Ralph Black says:

This doesn’t count those of us who already have concealed carry permits and therefore don’t have to go through a back ground check to buy a weapon. We buy because we see the collapse of the country happening around us. The moocher class that has been on the government dole is going to start loosing their handouts and since they think it is owed to them, they will come and try to take it away from those of us who worked hard for our stuff. Just look at the mobs that walk into stores, stuff their pockets and walk out. This is just the beginning. THEY WILL NOT TAKE MY HARD EARNED STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • rob says:

Good for you, Ralph! You are what makes America strong. Please continue fighting for your 2nd Amendment rights, along with the entire US Constitution…which is being trashed by this Dictator in Chief and his Congressional Socialist Democrats.

  9. nono524 says:

Gee, with flash mobs, London, and Holder, why would anyone think they need protection??????

  10. Justin says:

Do the math here 247,847 X 9 round clip = 2,230,623 rounds in one clip for everyone. 50 rounds per box 111,531,150 rounds! Excellent!!

I happen to own a gun dealership , and trust me since 2009 my business is booming. It would be nice to say thanks to Obummer, but “fast and furious” is more like what that scumtrash would like to really do to we entreprenuers. One memo Id like to tell all gun purchasers-this administration is realzing stopping the 2nd amendment is too difficult-they ARE trying to limit ammunition, particulary for small arms. Keep in contact with companies like Ruger or Colt-they will sell them direct, you just have to pay the higher costs.

  12. The Old Coach says:

The RIFLE club I belong (in Ohio) to was moribund a few years ago. Then “shall issue” passed, and it’s gone from 100 members to something over 600. The busiest range is the pistol range. I now have to go mid-week to get any time in at all. The club is flush, and runs IDPA and other pistol competitions almost every weekend.

  13. richard40 says:

That is why the USA has a better chance to survive than the UK. Once the moochers stop getting their Obama dollars, and start turning into actual looters, we are prepared to shoot them down like the rabid dogs they are.

  14. Michael L says:

“Gun purchases? What guns? Oh, sure, well…I bought a couple last year, but my dog—no, no, wait: someone ELSE’s dog took ‘em. Nope: no guns in this house, officers…”
Nice to see people voting with their FOID cards, so to speak. Good luck collecting them all from the citizenry, libs. Come and get them.

  15. Joe Mama says:

6 months ago I owned no guns or ammo. I currently own 4- AK-47s, 3-SKS’s, 3-Ruger 10/22′s, 3-Mossberg 500 12 gauges, 2-Mosin Nagants, a Glock 22 and Glock 27 with 4-29 rd mags, 22LR Western revolver, 10,400 rds of 22LR ammo, 5,000 rds of 7.62 x 39, 1,200 rds of 7.62 x 54, 1,000 rds of 12 gauge shotgun shells, 500 rds of .40 cal. Only played golf one time this year and that’s only because someone else offered to pay for the round.) It’s amazing how ones priorities can change so vastly in one year. I reckon I played a little part in those statistics.

    • When the fit hits the shan there will be far more firearms than ammo to go with them. Sure, stock up on firearms, but it won’t long before they run out of ammo. Therefore, ammo may be your best investment.

  16. Joe Mama says:

And btw I be a Buckeye.

  17. Felonius Snit says:

Everyone knows whats coming, everyone knows whats about to happen in this country, its 1938 all over again. Well folks, batten down the hatches and standby, and to all my fellow Marines out there, how about this for a new motto- _F_ THE NEW WORLD ORDER!

    • to ball buster says:

If you think the gov.com is going to put 2-3 humvee’s in front of every gun owners home, I have a question genius, where are you going to get the soldiers and humvee’s to do it, they are all oversees somewhere else but here. And do you really think that 100% of the soldiers will just follow O and start machine gunning americans with 50bmg’s??? not sure what you are smoking but all it takes is 5% of them saying no and their whole plan of 50cal gunning gun owners goes out the door. 200 million gun owners against 800K soldiers… naaaa your idea may work in theory but in the real world you would get a lot of resistance from wolverines….if you do not know what that means then you are too young to be posting here!

      • sdguero says:

Jesus christ dude! Maybe we all need to chill out a little. Please don’t start blasting on an unmarked delivery van in front of your house cause you think it’s the federal reserve spying on you… :-P

  18. ball buster says:

God help us if this is the cream of the crop buying weapons in America. You people are to stupid to see when both sides are taking you for a ride. the corporate elites have owned every republican and democratic president since the introduction of the federal reserve in 1913 and the ones they couldn’t own they killed. If you think your only worry is surviving the great welfare hoard that will attack you without any military training or combat rifles then it will be easy for the next republican president to disarm you. “for your own good”. Remember when an economic collapse occurs soldiers will do what they are told so their families will be housed, fed and protected from the terrorists that have illegal weapons deemed so by presidential order. Lets see how brave you are when the military comes to your house, parks 2-3 Humvee’s in your yard. train their .50 cal machine guns on you and your family as your hands are tie zipped behind your back and confiscate every weapon you own. The internet and cell towers will be down for the 2 weeks that it takes the national guard and active army to confiscate most of privately held weapons. they will hit the gun shops first and the those with class 3 firearms. but you are on their list. see what kind of defense is possible when no one even knows it is happening. Of course the brave intelligent souls on this forum will know long before that something is amiss when martial law is declared and some of you will have the smarts to stow a few weapons in a secret hiding place but know this. your wife will crumble under the simplest of implied threats to you or your children and spill the beans on your actions. fighting a superior force with your family in tow is impossible, ask the American Indians how that worked out for them. And if by chance you have a tactical brain in your body and you defeat the Humvee’s you will truly be designated a threat and your next confrontation will be with a 25mm chain gun from the Bradley fighting vehicle which can cut a brick house down in a minute or less or they may use a tow missile which will just vaporize your house and they will know when you are home for your neighbor will tell them just to stay on their good side. That my friends is your future, and their is nothing you can do about it. And if you still think the unions and those on the government dole are the sole source of your troubles by all means cry a little more.

    • chowthen says:

Why do you say Republican? Everytime I read a post blaming Republican I can always smell a commie democRAT. In case your illiterate mind didn’t know the Federal Reserve was signed into law by a commie democRAT named Woodrow Wilson but of course most black people don’t know that because they always have a demented knowledge of history.

  19. john says:

Wolfverines united , forget the alamo, forget waco, and death arrives by federal ammo express. All soldiers obey orders, period. Yesterday Unbamo takes ammo prices 30% up. You think your ammo will last . Remainders of Waco, are dead. Native AMERICANS like the indians , dead or dying.
BUY a gun, hell yes buy two guns. Need not NuOrleans PD will take first gun on site, an shoot you as civi stands head high in water.
Fullerton, Komifornia PD just beats you to death.
Survive if must, but buy food, beans-bullets-bandaid.
Militia of none, no ammo, no guns 1984 is here.
Komifornia surviver – no ammo – no guns.

  20. Duncan says:

I do agree with ballbuster, One must also consider all employed LEO’s as “recruits” in the Gov. raids on our weapons! It might take them a while to reach your house, but what else do they have to do in that senario?

  21. Do not despair: The US Military has thousands of multi-million dollar tanks, aircraft, ships etc and etc.

And this is exactly their weakness. Too expensive to maintain, especially when the entire economy collapses.

Look at the former Soviet Union and what happened to them.
