A Little Late, but…

Due to some unforeseen computer issues at our hotel in Orlando, we were unable to post from SHOT. I apologize for the delay, but here are some great new products to look for in 2009:
Safir/ATI .410 AR15
Built on a normal AR lower, this Turkish-made gun allows you to fire .410 shotshells out of an AR-15. It utilizes a gas system unlike any other I have come across. The gas is tapped about halfway down the barrel with a huge ring and a spring that looks like it came off a Dodge Ram’s shocks. Shipped with a 5-round magazine, a 15-round model will be offered for sale. As you might imagine, both are single-stack. With new .410 personal defense ammo available from Federal and the popularity of Taurus’ Judge revolver, I see this AR becoming a popular choice for home defense, especially when ATI starts to bring in upper assemblies for use with your current lower. For some great images of this bad boy, including a illustrative view of the gas system, go here and look around. Also, look for some upcoming video on this gun at www.gunsandhunting.com soon.
Ares Shrike 5.56 Advanced Weapon System
Want to make your AR a semi-auto SAW? Ares Defense System’s Shrike is an upper receiver assembly that allows for belt-fed ammunition to enter the chamber. Though primarily meant for military use with select-fire lowers, there is nothing to stop mounting the Shrike on a civilian-legal semi-auto lower, as Ares displayed at SHOT. While Ares is apparently sold out of the Shrike for the time being, one can hope that they will ramp up production so we can all modify our ARs to look like SAWs and scare anti-gunners.
Winchester Dual Bond Slugs
There are deformed slugs that make shooters happy, and then there is the new Winchester Dual Bond. You have to be extremely careful holding the expanded slug on display in Winchester’s booth lest you wound yourself on the 12 jagged surfaces resulting from the expansion of this revolutionary new product. Basically a bullet within a bullet, it retains just about 100 percent of its weight while providing twice the expansion of a normal slug. If the cut on my hand is any guide, deer will not like this product at all.
More to come, and check out The Firearm Blog and GunPundit for more goodies.
